No. 15 Baylor tops Washington in shootout at Alamo

Records fall as Heisman winner Griffin helps No. 15 Bears to 67-56 victory

Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, left, is brought down by Washington's Josh Shirley during the first half of the Alamo Bowl on Thursday night.

updated 2:37 a.m. ET Dec. 30, 2011

SAN ANTONIO - A thrilling, back-and-forth, record-shattering Alamo Bowl had barely ended when Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III already started hearing the chants.

"One more year! One more year!"

One more year? There's still the craziness of what happened Thursday night to get through first.

Griffin wasn't dazzling in possibly his last college game ? and didn't need to be ? yet No. 15 Baylor still pulled out an incredible Alamo Bowl victory in the highest-scoring regulation bowl game in history, beating Washington 67-56 in the wildest shootout of this bowl season or any other in memory.

If this was RG3's final showcase before jumping to the NFL, it was a gripping goodbye to watch. One of the nation's most electrifying players was upstaged by an even more exciting nail-biter that shattered the previous record for points in regulation set in the 2001 GMAC Bowl.

"We went out in style!" Griffin shouted to his teammates. He paraded the Alamo Bowl trophy around the field before taking it to the front row of the stands and his mother, who's already been looking at her son's NFL draft prospects.

Griffin said he was still catching his breath after this one.

"I want Baylor nation to enjoy this," Griffin said. "It's not about me. I've got about two weeks. I'll enjoy this the next day, and then the next day, and then I'll make it."

The previous bowl record for a regulation game was 102 total points set in the 2001 GMAC Bowl between Marshall and East Carolina. That game went to double overtime and ended with a combined 125 points ? which still stands as the overall bowl record.

Baylor, which won its first bowl game since 1992, and Washington (7-6) also set a bowl record for total offense in a game with 1,397 yards.

Griffin had an unremarkable night, throwing just one touchdown pass and running for another. But Terrance Ganaway starred ably in his place, rushing for 200 yards and five touchdowns. His last was a 43-yard run with 2:28 left to seal Baylor's first 10-win season since 1980.

Washington quarterback Keith Price outplayed his Heisman counterpart, going 23 for 27 with 438 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for another three scores.

"I think we'll have a hard time this bowl season to see a quarterback play as well as he did," Washington coach Steve Sarkisian.

Griffin was 24 of 33 for 295 yards ? and his only touchdown throw came on the game's opening drive.

Blown out in four other games against ranked opponents this season, the Huskies finally made one interesting. Not that it started that way after Baylor ran up 245 yards of offense alone in the first quarter ? awful even by the standards of Washington's defense, which is among the nation's worst.

Then the most award-winning QB in the country suddenly stopped looking like even the best one in the Alamodome.

Price, a sophomore who threw a school-record 29 touchdowns in his first year as the starter, began cutting into a 21-7 deficit with a 12-yard scoring strike to James Johnson. Seven minutes later he tied the game when Devin Aguilar somersaulted over the goal line after catching a 1-yard lob.

The overwhelming crowd of Baylor fans ? decked in green-and-gold Heisman shirts and armed with signs such as "Superman wears RG3 socks" ? stood in stunned silenced. That gave way to disbelieving gasps on the next series, when the typically sure-handed Griffin fumbled after getting popped by Andrew Hudson.

After that, it was practically a free-for-all of big plays.

A 56-yard touchdown dash by Chris Polk. An 80-yard touchdown catch by Washington's Jermaine Kearse two plays into the second half. An 89-yard scoring rumble by Baylor's Terrance Ganaway. Kearse again, catching and darting for 60 yards before getting dragged down, setting up Price's fourth touchdown toss the next play.

Back and forth, back and forth. One after another. In all, five plays covered 50 or more yards, three of them for scores.

"That was crazy," Baylor coach Art Briles said.

For an Alamo Bowl short on drama and light on matchups in recent years, it was a thrilling scoring spree that overshadowed the mere novelty of featuring the Heisman winner. And that in itself was a rarity for a bowl of this stature: Not since Ty Detmer took BYU to the Holiday Bowl in 1990 had a Heisman winner played in a bowl before New Year's Day.

Plenty came to see this one.

Anticipating a surge of Heisman gawkers, Alamo Bowl officials added 800 temporary seats and opened up others with obstructed views that required ticket-buyers to sign a form acknowledging the poor sightlines. Those seats sold, anyway, and the announced attendance of 65,256 was the fifth-largest in the bowl's history.

Others had better seats.

That includes Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland, who kicked for Baylor in the late 1980s but was here on business scouting Griffin in case the fourth-year junior enters the draft. Griffin's parents, two sisters and fianc?e watched the nail-biter with front-row seats.

Griffin acknowledged this week his parents are looking at his draft prospects but denies having any substantial talks with them.

Win or lose, it was an impressive finale for Washington after stumbling into the postseason losing four of its last six. Particularly against a ranked team after then-Top 25 opponents Nebraska, Stanford, Oregon and USC all crushed the Huskies by an average of 24 points.

NFL Network Analyst Heath Evans Slams Holmgren, Hillis, Browns Offense

CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) ? Count NFL Network analyst and former NFL fullback Heath Evans as someone who doesn?t appear to be a big fan of Mike Holmgren and his current regime with the Browns.

Evans, who played for the Seahawks, Dolphins, Saints and Patriots, came on with the ?Bull and Fox? on 92.3 The Fan on Wednesday, and opened some eyes wondering if Holmgren is truly the answer for the Browns.

?I?m not sure if Mike Holmgren?s the guy to actually turn this thing around in Cleveland,? Evans said. ?There is so much more of a bigger need than replacing Colt McCoy in Cleveland.?

Count Evans as a fan of McCoy, but at the same time he feels that an offense that leads the team in drops is a huge reason why the QB hasn?t gotten the credit he?s deserved this season.

?If you take away half the drops, Colt McCoy is right in the middle of half the quarterbacks right now,? Evans said.

The analyst was asked more about Holmgren, who he played under while with the Seahawks. While saying that there was a lot of dysfunction while with Seattle, Evans said on ?Bull and Fox? that Holmgren simply hasn?t adopted to the style of today?s NFL.

?Mike Holmgren tries to squeeze everybody into that system, I?ve got news for ya, the west coast system is not a world beater anymore,? Evans said. ?In the 80?s early 90?s it caught everybody off guard the crossing routes all the mix and matches. Now if you?ve got good DC?s and disciplined players on the defensive side of the football it?s not beating anybody.?

While Evans doesn?t appear to be a big fan of Holmgren, one coach he does admire is Bill Belichick, who still is looking for another Super Bowl ring with the Pats. Evans says that unlike Holmgren, Belichick has adopted to today?s NFL style.

?We were a game plan team in New England, they still are,? Evans said. ?That?s why a majority of the time they come out on the winning side of the football.?

Evans says a big issue with Holmgren is how he forces the issue with players. He says that on the offensive side of the ball, the Browns are way to simple, and it goes back to what Holmgren has done with the roster.

?I think Mike just has a problem for seeing what each individual player can add to a team, instead of trying to stuff everybody into a system,? Evans said. ?I watch this offensive football team (the Browns) and I can call most of the plays.?

Then there?s the saga with running back Peyton Hillis. The bruiser ran himself into injuries that cost him six games this year, and Evans says from the people he?s spoken to about it, Hillis may not have been as banged up as he claimed to be.

?I just hear a lot of mixed emotion from players coming out of there about his position,? Evans said. ?You talk about guys questioning if he could have played, so many different things that have stirred up my thought process, hamstrings are funny things. This guys gets right back on the field and has big games, hamstrings don?t act that way.?

Evans says while he has not actual proof that Hillis was tanking it, there?s a number of reasons to believe that the running back was only looking out for his best interest when thinking about the future.

?Can I comment with facts? No, but there?s a lot coming out of that locker room that has raised my ear and made me say what is truly going on there,? Evans said.

The future of the Browns is for sure up in the air. The team is heading towards a likely 12 loss season, and with it, Evans said Wednesday that things need to change for the team to finally take a step to the next level.

?There?s some dysfunction there if the Cleveland Browns want to be successful have to be corrected, especially in that division,? Evans said.

Turkey: funerals held after air strike

The Turkish military confirmed the Wednesday night raids, but said its jets struck an area of northern Iraq that is frequently used by Kurdish rebels to enter Turkey, after drones detected a group approaching Turkey's border. (AP Photo)

(AP) ? Thousands of mourners gathered in southeast Turkey on Friday for the funerals of 35 Kurdish civilians who were killed in a botched raid by Turkish military jets that mistook the group for Kurdish rebels based in Iraq.

Turkish television footage showed people, many weeping and lamenting the dead, as they gathered after the air strikes Wednesday that killed a group of smugglers along the border, one of the deadliest episodes in the conflict between the Turkish state and Kurdish rebels who took up arms in 1984.

In a second day of civil unrest, demonstrators clashed with police in Diyarbakir and at least two other cities in the mostly Kurdish southeast. Trade unionists and other groups planned a protest in Istanbul later Friday. About 500 Iraqi Kurds denounced the airstrikes at a rally in the city of Irbil in the Kurdish-controlled region of northern Iraq.

Noncombatants have often been caught in the crossfire of Turkey's war, but one of the highest civilian tolls in a single day further soured relations between the government and ethnic Kurds who have long faced discrimination. A government campaign to reconcile with Kurds by granting them more rights has stalled amid a surge in fighting this year.

Dogan news agency video showed people digging graves on a hill near the southeast village of Gulyazi, home of some of the slain smugglers, and the funeral rites quickly took on a political tone. Thousands of people walked along a mountain path with coffins draped in red, yellow and green, the colors associated with Kurdish identity and the rebel group PKK.

In the crowd footage, one poster showed an image of Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed chief of the PKK, whose Kurdish acronym stands for Kurdistan Workers' Party. The government, which along with the West says the rebels are a terrorist group, has had secretive contact with Ocalan at his island prison as part of its effort to make peace with Kurdish opponents.

Families at the funerals urged rebels to take revenge and they accused Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of being a "murderer," according to Firat, a pro-Kurdish news agency.

A somber Erdogan described the attack near the border village of Ortasu in Sirnak province as "unfortunate" and "saddening," noting half the dead were under 20 years old. He said two F-16 planes bombed the area after images provided by drones showed a 40-person group approaching the border from the Iraqi side.

"It was revealed later that they were part of a group smuggling cigarettes, diesel fuel and such," he said.

Usually, according to Erdogan, such smuggling is done by groups of just three to five people. He said at least two recent deadly attacks on military outposts near the Iraq-Turkey border were carried out by guerrillas who smuggled guns across the border on mules.

Four hours of official video footage of the raid will be examined, he said.

The prime minister criticized Turkey's Taraf newspaper, which has published reports of alleged military schemes and misconduct in the past, for a headline that read: "The state bombed its own people."

"No state would intentionally bomb its people," he said. "In the past, such things may have occurred, but it is not possible for such a thing to occur during our administration."

The remarks touched on the complex power dynamics in modern Turkey, where Erdogan, a devout Muslim with a strong electoral mandate, has undercut the political clout of the military, a traditional guardian of secular ideals.

In an email statement, the PKK did not distinguish between the civilian government and the armed forces in its blame for what it called a "massacre," and referred to "technical and intelligence support" provided by the United States.

The U.S. recently deployed four Predator drones to Turkey from Iraq following the American troops' withdrawal from the country to assist Turkey in its fight against the rebels.

The Kurdish conflict is a drag on Turkey's efforts to burnish its image as a regional model and advocate for democratic change in neighboring countries such as Syria, where thousands have died since an uprising began in March.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, a chief architect of Turkey's rising profile, said the airstrikes would be thoroughly investigated and should not be exploited for political gain. Another top official, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc, said the inquiry would not be a whitewash.

"If there is any negligence, any fault or any intention, those who are responsible will be found and will endure the consequences," Arinc said.

The military issued a message of condolence that was carried on the state-run Anadolu news agency. There was no apology, but such a public outreach is highly unusual in the Turkish armed forces, which are traditionally tightlipped about operations.

"We wish God's mercy and grace to those who lost their lives in the cross-border incident of Dec. 28, 2011, and extend our condolences to their family and friends," the statement said. Last week, the military reported the deaths of 48 suspected rebels in offensives backed by air power.

Kurds make up around 20 percent of Turkey's 74 million people. While many have assimilated and are not politically active, a significant number feel marginalized and want autonomy in Kurdish-dominated southeast Turkey. The rebels have long used northern Iraq as a springboard for hit-and-run attacks on Turkish targets.

The government has taken conciliatory steps, allowing Kurdish-language institutes and private Kurdish courses as well as Kurdish television broadcasts. But Kurdish activists say far more needs to be done to heal scars dating from a time when the Kurdish language was banned, and cite police roundups of Kurdish politicians, journalists and others suspected of rebel links as a sign of intolerance for the minority.

Samsung Galaxy S III Will Have 3D Functionality ? To Be Unveiled At MWC 2012 [Rumor]

Alright, so we know Fridays? ?leaked? renders of the Samsung Galaxy S III turned out to be nothing more than fan-created concept art but now we?re hearing rumblings around the net that Samsung could be planning to introduce the device at MWC 2012. Okay, so that shouldn?t come as much of a surprise given Samsung?s yearly refreshes, but the kicker is that a Korean website is reporting not only will the GSIII be unveiled but that Samsung may incorporate 3D into the device. This would help give Samsung a leg up on the iPhone and also complete their 3D ecosystem adding functionality with their 3D televisions. And here you thought you?d seen the last of 3D smartphones.

When it comes to specs, nothing has been confirmed but I?ll go ahead and play along. Rumors place the device at the ?uber-high-end? bracket of Android devices with a Super AMOLED Plus HD display, quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, LTE connectivity and of course, running on Android?s latest Ice Cream Sandwich firmware (with TouchWiz). Still unclear is if the 3D functionality will be available on all Galaxy S III devices or if it will come as a variant (Galaxy S 3D). That being said, to keep costs down, if the 3D model becomes a variant, it could share specs more along the lines of what?s already offered with the Galaxy S II.

I wouldn?t take these rumors with more than a grain of salt but with MWC 2012 only a few more months away ? we?ll find out soon enough firsthand with Phandroid reporting live from the event. Given the hate with 3D devices, would you guys be terribly upset to find out the Galaxy S III was a 3D capable device?

Sexual assault reports up at U.S. military academies: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The U.S. Department of Defense said on Tuesday that there was a rise in reports of sexual assault at the nation's military academies in the most recent school year and announced new policies to help victims.

The "Annual Report on Sexual Harassment and Violence at Military Service Academies" found that during the 2010-11 year there were 65 reports of sexual assaults involving cadets and midshipmen, up from 41 in the prior year.

To help address the jump, the academies are implementing two new policies.

Service members who have been victims of sexual assault will now be able to request an expedited transfer from their units. The military will now also retain records of sexual assaults longer -- in some cases as long as 50 years.

"We know that the military academies are similar to college campuses around the country in that sexual harassment and assault are challenges that all faculty, staff and students need to work to prevent," said Major General Mary Kay Hertog, director of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office.

"However, when it does occur, we owe it to those who have been victimized, and to every cadet and midshipman, to do everything possible to provide needed support and to hold those who commit sexual assault appropriately accountable."

As part of the review process, Department of Defense officials visited the U.S. Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy and reviewed academy policies and procedures. They also held focus groups.

Officials found most academy programs fulfilled or in some cases surpassed existing policies and directives, but Hertog said they have also identified areas for improvement.

Mexico makes huge meth precursor chemicals seizure (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexico said Friday that it seized 229 metric tons of precursor chemicals used to make methamphetamine, the third such huge seizure this month at the Pacific port of Lazaro Cardenas, all of which were bound for a port in Guatemala.

The seizure brings to more than 534 tons the amount of meth chemicals detected at the Mexican port in less than a month.

Authorities announced on Dec. 19 that they had found almost 100 metric tons of methylamine at Lazaro Cardenas, and earlier said that 205 tons of the chemical had been found there over several days in early December.

Experts familiar with meth production call it a huge amount of raw material, noting that under some production methods, precursor chemicals can yield about half their weight in uncut meth.

The Attorney General's Office said the most recent seizure was found in 1,600 drums, and had been shipped from Shanghai, China. All three shipments originated in China and were destined for Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala.

The office has not indicated which cartels may have been moving the chemicals, but U.S. officials have noted that the Sinaloa cartel, Mexico's most powerful, has moved into meth production on an industrial scale.

Sinaloa also has operations in Guatemala, and given recent busts by the Mexican army of huge meth processing facilities in Mexico, the gang may have decided to move some production to the Central American country.

Lazaro Cardenas is located in the western Michoacan state, which is dominated by the Knights Templar cartel and previously by the La Familia group.

However, a series of arrests, deaths and infighting may have weakened those gangs' ability to engage in massive meth production.

Also Friday, the attorney general's office in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz reported that it had found ten bodies in an area along the border with the neighboring state of Tamaulipas. The office said investigators were alerted to the bodies by a tip, and are working to identify them and the cause of death.

The area has been the scene of bloody battles between the Gulf and Zetas cartels.

Finally Friday, federal police captured Javier Mercado Guerrero, alias "El Indio," who allegedly led the operations of the Zetas drug cartel in the Veracruz city of Poza Rica and surrounding areas inland.

Police said Mercado Guerrero had served as a local police officer in 2010, and passed information to the Zetas.

Local police in Veracruz have become so corrupt that on Wednesday, the government decided to dissolve the entire police force in the state's largest city, also known as Veracruz, and sent the Navy in to patrol.

State spokeswoman Gina Dominguez said 800 police officers and 300 administrative employees were laid off. Dominguez said they can apply for jobs in a state police force, but must meet stricter standards.
