Pakistan, Australia seek revival in UAE

Pakistan and Australia will seek to reverse their recent poor fortunes amidst oppressive heat and unusual timings in their limited over series which starts on Tuesday.

Pakistan, who have not beaten Australia in a one-day series since 2002, have lost 4-1 to England and 3-1 in Sri Lanka, slipping to sixth in the one-day rankings.

Australia, who slid to fourth from number one for the first time in three years after a humiliating 4-0 defeat in England last month, not only face an opponent laced with quality spinners but also with high temperatures.

Pakistan, who are playing their home series on neutral venues because of security fears in their country, was forced to host the series in the extreme hot conditions in United Arab Emirates after Sri Lanka backed out as alternate.

Pakistan also considered Malaysia as the option but threats of rains ruled out that option too, forcing them to start the one-day matches at 6pm in the evening and finish them at 1:45 am the next day.

Australia had the taste of conditions and timings in their 66-run win over Afghanistan on Saturday.

But Pakistan's vice-captain Mohammad Hafeez believed both teams will have to cope with the conditions.

"We have to deal with that, as professionals we are ready to play and although the timings are odd but we will manage once the series gets underway," said Hafeez, who is also Pakistan's Twenty20 captain.

The three one-day matches will be followed by as many Twenty20 internationals.

Hafeez hoped Pakistan will not think about the past.

"We always believe in performing well in every series. The history (not beating Australia since 2002) is also on your mind but we are not bothered about it and start with an aim of doing well," said Hafeez.

Pakistan will rely heavily on their spinning trio of Saeed Ajmal, Hafeez and Shahid Afridi, more so because they left out frontline paceman Umar Gul for the one-dayers.

"Our spinners got some success here against Sri Lanka and England with Ajmal, being one of the best in the world, and Afridi, so we have got good spinners for the conditions and hopefully they do well again," said Hafeez.

Pakistan also left out experienced Younis Khan but included wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal to supplement the fragile batting.

Australian captain Michael Clarke sought consistency in his team's performance.

"Both teams are keen to get some consistency back into the one-day game. It's just about performing consistently, getting out and playing some of your best cricket. That's our goal as a team: to make sure we are playing as well at home and away."

Clarke said it will be a hard fought series, with Pakistani spinners holding the center stage.

"I know it's going to be a hard fought contest against Pakistan. I think spin in general is going to be a factor. To have success in these next three one-dayers, I think it is going to come down to whoever bowls spin the best and whoever plays spin the best will win the series.

"Pakistan are a very good one-day team. I think their greatest strength is definitely going to be their spin bowling. They got some really good spinners in conditions where scoring against spin bowling is going to be quite tough."

Australia have left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty in their squad to add to leg-spin of Steve Smith, and off-spinners Glenn Maxwell and David Hussey and part-timers in Clarke.

2nd person dies of hantavirus after Yosemite visit

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) ? A second person has died of a rare, rodent-borne disease after visiting Yosemite National Park earlier this summer and park officials are warning past visitors to be aware of some flu-like aches and symptoms as fears of a possible outbreak mount.

Health officials learned this weekend of the second hantavirus death, which killed a person who visited the park in June, spokesman Scott Gediman said in a statement.

There is one other confirmed case of the illness, and a fourth is being investigated.

Park officials are warning visitors who stayed in tent cabins at Curry Village from mid-June through the end of August to beware of any symptoms of hantavirus, which can include fever, aches, dizziness and chills. An outreach effort is under way to contact visitors from that period who stayed in "Signature Tent Cabins," which have more insulation and amenities than other tent cabins.

Federal health officials say symptoms may develop up to 5 weeks after exposure to urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents. There is no specific treatment for the virus, and about one-third of people who contract it will die.

After-hours calls to Yosemite officials seeking further details were not immediately returned Monday night.

The first death was reported earlier this month.

Following the first death, state health officials advised anyone with symptoms to seek medical attention and let doctors know if they were camping in Yosemite. Officials said thousands of people visit the park every month, so it would be impossible to track everyone who had set foot in Curry Village.

Curry Village is the most popular and economical lodging area in the park, a picturesque assemblage of rustic cabins at the base of the 3,000-foot promontory Glacier Point.

Gediman told the San Francisco Chronicle that of the 408 tent cabins in the village, 91 are of the "signature" variety where the sick stayed, which feature more insulation and amenities than the others.

It was not clear how many people stayed in the cabins in the period in which park officials are warning visitors.

Gediman said contractors are working on the signature cabins to protect park-goers.

"They're doing everything they can to eliminate areas where mice can get into the cabins," Gediman told the San Francisco Chronicle. "This was never because the cabins were dirty, it was never because we didn't take care of them. This is just because approximately 20 percent of all deer mice are infected with hantavirus. And they're here in Yosemite Valley."

This year's deaths mark the first such deaths in park visitors, although two others were stricken in a more remote area in 2000 and 2010, officials said.

U.S. soldiers killed two to shield anarchist plot: prosecutor

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Four soldiers in Georgia who belonged to an anarchist militia that wanted to overthrow the U.S. government killed a former soldier and his girlfriend because he had learned of their plans, prosecutors said on Monday.

Prosecutors revealed the suspected motive as one of the soldiers pleaded guilty on Monday to voluntary manslaughter and other charges and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors over the December 5, 2011, shooting deaths of Michael Roark, 19, and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Tiffany York.

During his plea hearing on Monday, Private First Class Michael Burnett said Roark had learned of the militia while serving at Fort Stewart near Savannah, and the group came to see him "as a loose end," according to Long County assistant district attorney Isabel Pauley.

The four accused militia members, who were all stationed at Fort Stewart, operated under the name "FEAR," or Forever Enduring Always Ready, the prosecutor said. They plotted to assassinate President Barack Obama and to attack their Army base and a dam in Washington state, Pauley said.

They also discussed poisoning the apple crop in Washington state, the prosecutor said, and purchased $87,000 worth of weapons to carry out their attacks.

Burnett, who wore his Army uniform in court on Monday, agreed to cooperate with authorities in the prosecution of the three other members of the militia charged with the killing, Pauley said.

Prosecutors have not decided whether to seek the death penalty for the other three soldiers, who all face murder and gang charges. No trial dates have been set.

The bodies of Roark and York were discovered in a heavily wooded, rural area of Long County and both had been shot to death, Pauley said.

The army is assisting with the case, but the soldiers are being prosecuted in a civilian court in Long County, Pauley said.

Burnett faces 10 years in prison as part of his plea agreement but could still face the death penalty if he does not cooperate, the prosecutor said.

NetTALK Duo Wi-Fi - Product Reviews: Baby, Pet, Furniture, Family ...

We haven?t had home phone service in a long time. With the prices of having a home phone, when you already have a cell phone it seemed useless, especially with the high bill. We?ve tried cutting costs every way that we can but having NO home phone and solely replying on your cell phone sometimes just doesn?t cut it. However, if you?re like us I have found the solution to this problem!
NetTALK Duo Wi-Fi is a home phone service that you pay for once a year and you get your local and long distance calls. There?s absolutely NO hidden fee?s.
I have tried the other brand, but there was so much static and interruption I just didn?t care for it at all. I was a little hesitant at first thinking that NetTALK Duo Wi-Fi would be the same, but I was wrong.? There was no static or interruptions, the calling was really clear. I now use the home phone every chance I get. I prefer talking on the home phone rather than talking on my cell phone.

Installing the?NetTALK Duo Wi-Fi is REALLY simple! I did it in no time flat and I got our phone number picked out. It took about 10 minutes from start to finish to set it up. Simple instructions guided us through every step.

The netTALK DUO WiFi is a sleek and versatile VoIP telephone device that connects via wireless or traditional Internet connection (through router or computer). Enjoy free calling features such as call waiting, conference calling, Enhanced 911, 411 directory assistance, visual voicemail, and a videophone application. Choose a phone number or keep your own. Texas delegates planning a mutiny?

Members of the Texas delegation on Monday. (Goodwin/Yahoo)

TAMPA--On Monday morning, at a meeting of more than 100 Texan delegates and alternates at the Saddlebrook Resort 20 miles north of Tampa, one topic got the crowd more fired up than any other. Delegate Melinda Fredricks read aloud a letter condemning recent changes to the national Republican party's rules that would allow the GOP presidential candidate to veto and replace state delegates.

"Our delegates are in shock that such an amendment even would be presented before the Rules Committee much less passed into rule," Fredricks said. "Please know from the Texas delegation standpoint that the only way a floor fight can be avoided is for this rule to be stricken."

At that point, the entire Texas delegation stood up and applauded.

Texans don't necessarily want to have an ugly floor fight on the same day the party officially nominates Mitt Romney. But they're willing to do it if their concerns about the rule aren't satisfied. The changes, which Mitt Romney's top lawyer put forward last week and Gov. Haley Barbour along with some other Romney supporters have embraced, are seen by opponents as intended to significantly weaken the power of grassroots politics and insurgent candidates such as Ron Paul. Many against the move worry that it would give national candidates the power to replace delegates--often grassroots party faithfuls--with big-time donors or friends.

"We truly consider that an infringement on our rights," Fredricks, a member of the rules committee, told Yahoo News of the changes. Today, states generally choose their delegates at state conventions, and then those individuals travel to the national convention to cast their vote for a candidate based on the share the candidate won of the primary or caucus vote of each state. But, the changes could allow a candidate such as Mitt Romney to boot out any delegates who are assigned to vote for him and replace them.

While opposition to the rules began with Ron Paul supporters, it has spread to the entire Texas delegation and significant portions of those from South Carolina, Colorado, Virginia and Louisiana too. Mitt Romney's campaign lawyer Ben Ginsberg proposed the rule last week, but even some Romney supporters are staunchly opposed to the changes. Indiana delegate and Romney supporter James Bopp wrote in an email to RNC members that it's "the biggest power grab in the history of the Republican Party." Fredricks, a Romney supporter, says only 30 people of the more than 300 Texan alternates and delegates support Ron Paul, yet the delegation is "united" in its opposition to the rule.

At 2pm on Tuesday, the Rules Committee members will debate whether the new rule should be struck down. Fredericks thinks she has the 29 members necessary to start a debate about the change, and is hopeful she can resolve the issue before the committee adjourns and joins the larger convention floor.

"We like to fight behind closed doors...Most of us are reluctant to do a floor flight," Fredricks said.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus told Salon Monday?that he does not expect a floor fight, though he did not explain why.

Paulites are among the staunchest opponents of the new rule. It would prevent insurgent candidates such as Paul from raking up delegate votes in caucus states where party conventions instead of the statewide vote determine how many delegates are awarded. ABC's Chris Good points out that Paul would not have won a plurality of delegates in four states if this rule had been in effect during this primary.

Paul supporter Karen Skrill, an alternate delegate from Vermont, said she and her husband Stewart, a delegate, are upset about the changed rules.

"If this is how it's going to be, I don't want to be a Republican," Skrill told Yahoo News in a discussion on the floor Monday. The Skrills are retired farmers.

"Texas in general doesn't believe the national level should be picking delegates," added Jon Burgin, an alternate delegate from San Antonio who supports Paul. "It's pretty egregious."

Graphic D-Signs, Inc. - Small Business Advertising Agency? - NJ ...

By Danielle Avenoso / Senior Brand Strategist & Account Manager,?NJ Marketing Agency?Graphic D-Signs, Inc.
Are you a small business owner trying to accelerate company growth? If so, here are nine principles you should know about marketing to ensure greater success and drive ROI.? ? 1.???? Empower yourself with knowledge. While it takes time out of your schedule, it?s important to conduct research on your industry, market, direct competitors and consumers. You can never know too much?and you can certainly know too little. Just as athletes prepare for the big game, marketing success requires countless hours of practice. ?

2.???? Know your budget. Identify the investment you want to allocate to your marketing. A good estimate is roughly five percent of your sales. It is critical to establish a budget, because this will allow you to properly and effectively plan your marketing.

3.???? Create an identity. As a company, your brand is one of your greatest assets. It communicates and connects with audiences, and creates passion for your business. Think of your brand as a spokesperson for your company: highlighting your promises and propositions to the consumer. 4.???? Formulate a plan of attack. Too many times, small business owners react instead of thinking about business implications, competitors and consumers. It is more fruitful to formulate a plan of attack, first. What media channels will you leverage to connect with your consumer? If you plan, your strategy will be more effective and your budget will remain efficiently intact. 5.???? Strategy is king. What is the message you want to convey in all marketing components? What service or value do you provide that sets you apart from the competition? This single-minded idea should live throughout all advertising deliverables for an in-sync marketing message. 6.??? Execute your strategy. How will you put your strategy to work? Print? Website? Online banners? Coupons and promotions? Radio? TV? Identify your deliverables and tools of attack.? 8.???? Track. Measure. Record. Accountability is key, so remember to monitor and gauge the effectiveness of your budget and advertising campaign. By tracking leads via different media channels, you can identify those channels that give you the best ROI versus channels that need to be further optimized.

9.???? Improvise! By utilizing what you?ve learned from data tracking, you can change-as-you-go. Proper measurement helps you discover how to better spend your budget, which channels to remove from the media plan, and which channels to try in the future.

Top 10 lines Romney should not use in his acceptance address at Republican Convention

The Republican Party will officially nominate Mitt Romney for president this week in Tampa. Here are 10 lines his speechwriters should refrain from including in his nationally televised acceptance speech Thursday night:

(10.) Read My Lips, Tampa: All New Taxes. We?re going to have bucket loads of them. Good God, will they be stifling!

(9.) When President Obama entered the White House, he removed a bust of Winston Churchill from the Oval Office. When I?m president, it?s coming back to the Oval, where it will stand as a shining example of strength and fortitude ? right next to a bust of Charlie Manson.

(8.) The Romney administration will be bipartisan. That?s why I am happy to pledge tonight that, if elected, I will nominate Joe Biden to be my Secretary of State. [Wait for applause.] And Attorney General Eric Holder, he?s staying too! [Pause for raucous cheers.]

(7.) If you like Obamacare, let me tell you, you?re going to LOVE Romneycare. Primarily because it?s the same thing.

(6.) Good evening, Tampa! [Pause for screams.] 9/11 was an inside job! Did you know fire can?t melt steel?

(5.) And I say with firm conviction, yes America, corporations are people too ? but no, Mexicans are most certainly not..

(4.) After some soul-searching, I?ve decided to replace Paul Ryan with Todd Akin.

(3.) As president, I pledge to keep the public updated every month with a White House newsletter. And I am proud to announce tonight that Rep. Ron Paul has agreed to edit it.

(2.) In this White House, former union boss Andy Stern is among the most regular visitors. Not in a Romney White House. In a Romney White House, Andy Stern will be replaced with one of the greatest football coaches this country has ever known, and one of the most honorable men I know, one Mr. Jerry Sandusky.

(1.) Good evening Tampa. Let?s talk about the difference between legitimate rape and illegitimate rape.

ROCCAT Sense High Precision Gaming Mousepad now comes in ...

by Edwin - on August 26th, 2012

You know for sure that hardcore gamers take their gaming very, very seriously. Otherwise, they would not be hardcore, would they? Every single bit of performance counts, just like how the high speed and high precision sport of Formula 1 is like. After all, you can never quite tell whether you missed that last money shot simply because your mouse did not register that final flick of your wrist as accurately as you thought it would ? only to realize that you were let down by your mouse pad simply because its grooves were all worn out.

Well, if reading the above paragraph actually caused you to have a second look at your mouse pad, only to see that it indeed has grown thinner than it originally was, perhaps it is time to reconsider a new mouse pad. I remember my first ?professional? mouse mat from 3M, boy was it ideal to frag my opponents into oblivion, but the extremely low sensitivity setting in my Quake configuration made me run out of space ? real fast, leading me to look out for a larger mouse pad. Enter the Chrome Blue version of the ROCCAT Sense High Precision Gaming Mousepad of today.

The Chrome Blue version will feature a revised surface, in addition to more intense colors while measuring all of 2mm high (or should we say, low?). The special microcrystalline coating that was incorporated into the fabric surface is extremely effective at minimizing frictional resistance between the mouse and the pad, hence noticeably improving the gliding capability of mice. Not only that, it works extremely quietly with hardly any noise, allowing your mouse to glide almost silently over the entire ROCCAT mousepad without missing a beat. The ROCCAT Sense Chrome Blue High Precision Gaming Mousepad can be purchased for ?19.99 if you are living across the pond, while those living Stateside will end up with the slightly better deal at $19.99 a pop.

The ROCCAT Sense Chrome Blue High Precision Gaming Mousepad measures 400mm x 280mm, making it ideal to perform sweeping mouse movements. Folks like me who have extremely low sensitivity will love this mousepad which sports a rubberized coating for the entire underside, making sure the mouse pad sits perfectly and securely even on smooth surfaces.

What's next for 'Dark Knight' shooting theater?

By Randee Dawn, NBC News contributor

Rick Giase / EPA file

The Century 16 Theater in Aurora, Colo.

Exactly one month after the mass shooting at the Century movie theater in Aurora, Colo., the city of Aurora posed a question to its Facebook fans: What should happen to the theater next? Would anyone really want to go see a movie at the site of a such a tragedy?

A survey attached to the Facebook post asks respondents: "As Aurora moves forward after the tragedy of July 20, it is our hope that the entire community will participate and benefit from the citywide healing process. Many people have asked about the future of Aurora's Century 16 theater. We want to know your thoughts. Please take a few minutes to tell us your thoughts. These comments will be shared with Cinemark for consideration in their decision making process."

Though the responses given in the survey are private, Facebook users have left a wide range of public comments.

"(C)an't let him win by closing the theater!" posted Robyn Severson.?

Noted Kara Johnsen Emery: "It should be knocked down and built back up from scratch, and not only because of the shooting, but because of the lack of security features and crowd it drew for years. It has always felt like an unsafe place!"

Added Barbara Willis: "Donate it to a non-profit dedicated to peace."

Several comments suggested turning the place into a memorial; one thought having Syfy's "Ghost Hunters" called in to "do their thing" was a good idea. But many seemed to agree with Severson -- that to close down the theater would be to "let" the shooter, James Holmes, "win."

The City of Aurora, Colo., posted later that comments posted to Facebook would also be shared with owner Cinemark Holdings. NBC News reached out to Cinemark; the company had no comment.

The theater has been closed since the July 20 incident, in which 12 people were shot to death and 58 injured.

Tell us what you think in our poll, or over on Facebook.

Romney to declare goal of North American energy independence by 2020

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will lay out policies on Thursday aimed at achieving North American energy independence by 2020 by pursuing a sharp increase in production of oil and natural gas on federal lands and off the U.S. coast.

Romney is to unveil his plan at a truck and supply business in Hobbs, New Mexico, as he seeks to draw a sharp contrast between his energy policies and those of President Barack Obama and detail in part how he would rekindle job growth in the United States.

His emphasis on the economy amounts to an effort to return the campaign to the central issue Romney believes is most critical in the November 6 election and the key to a victory for him.

The economic debate has to a certain extent been sidelined in recent days by controversial remarks about rape by a Senate Republican candidate in Missouri, Todd Akin, who Romney has denounced.

Romney's energy policies are heavily tilted toward increased production of carbon-based resources, oil, gas and coal, that environmentalists blame for global warming. He is outlining the policy two days after going over some of the details with executives from the oil industry who contributed to his campaign at fund-raising events in Texas.

Republicans are eager to make greater use of the U.S. energy supply to increase jobs for Americans suffering amid an 8.3 percent unemployment rate. They would curtail some federal regulations to permit more production.

Romney is to predict that a full-blown energy plan will create 3 million jobs in energy sectors and other areas, part of an ambitious effort to create 12 million jobs during a Romney presidency.

"I want every American who wants a good job to be able to have one," Romney told Republicans at a fund-raising event in Little Rock on Wednesday.

The centerpiece of Romney's energy plan is to permit individual states to manage energy development on federal lands within their borders, according to a "white paper" released by the campaign and a briefing for reporters by senior aides in advance of the speech.

Currently the federal government controls development on these lands, and Romney's aides said that under Obama, this has led to a sharp reduction in exploration over the past year.

Letting states issue permits for exploration on federal lands would speed up the process, Romney will argue.

Romney would also open up areas off the East Coast to oil exploration, and in particular would reverse Obama's decision to suspend development off the coast of Virginia following the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

He would establish a five-year offshore leasing plan that would open new areas for development beginning with those off the coast of Virginia and the Carolinas.

A North American energy partnership with Canada and Mexico would also be sought and Romney would allow construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to Texas, which has been delayed by the Obama administration.

"I'm going to take advantage of our energy resources: Oil, coal, gas, nuclear, renewables, wind, solar. North America will be energy independent by the last year of my second term," he said.

The plan makes little mention of climate change or greenhouse gases. Romney policy adviser Oren Cass said Romney supports green energy and government spending on energy research, but opposes loan guarantees for green companies.

A tax credit for the wind industry expires at the end of this year. Obama supports an extension of it while Romney opposes it even though it could hurt him with voters in Iowa and Colorado. Cass said the wind industry has lost 10,000 jobs and growth has slowed.

"Gov. Romney is focused on actually setting the wind industry up to be a competitive, innovative industry that can succeed on its own two feet, like so many other successful and profitable industries in the country," he said.

The cost and environmental parameters of the air conditioning ...

It is important for you to know that the air conditioning installation Memphis serves you round the clock. Its scope of operations is not merely restricted to the prospects of installation and that of sale. It is open for the facilities of repair maintenance and service. This explains the reason behind it's round the clock availability. As far as the prospect of installation is concerned, the easy accessibility all the day round is equally advantageous. You needn't bank on an outsourcing option. That's because the similar facility from which you are buying can address the cause of installation.

The air conditioning installation Memphis is not only experienced but also includes an exclusive array of skilled technicians. With years of exposure to the geographical conditions of Memphis, the work persons are exactly aware of the conditioning requirements. Keeping in mind the features of the environment and that of your immediate surrounding; the technicians can guide your scheme of selection. Much of the functional impact of the coolers, conditioner and humidifiers depend on the layout and structure of the interior. Ensuring you of the zeal of comfort, care and that of economy happens to be the driving incentive of this skilled workforce.

An air conditioner, which is disproportionate, and out of size to your living area, will fail to live up to its purpose. The choice of size is as important as the range of economy. Depending on the surface area, and features of installation, the air conditioning installation Memphis can help earmark your choice. The service is marked by a reasonable amount of affordability. There are lucrative schemes of financing, as well. So, if finance happens to be a bothersome case, you can go in for the deals of financing. In addition, you can request the concerned service for the provision of the price estimate. The service can thrash out the same by online means.

Since the comfortable conditioning of the household ambience is of paramount significance and everyone looks forward to the same, the air conditioning installation memphis doesn't mind offering lucrative terms of the bargain. Additionally, when the relevance of conditioning is directly proportional to the factors of health, there is no reason why you shouldn't get your investment's worth.

Here's the Only Tiny Kitchen You'll Ever Want to Brag About [Beautiful]

I have a dream of living in a tiny apartment where everything is multifunctional and/or has the ability to transform. Beds that turn into desks. Bookshelves that hide a dining set. Side tables that contain an emergency chair. But what about the kitchen? What can I do with the kitchen? Why not pack the entire thing into a low-sitting, floating sideboard? More »

95% The Imposter

All Critics (62) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (59) | Rotten (3)

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.

Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.

"The Imposter" becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which may never be known.

This is one creepy mystery.

"The Imposter" initially seems to be a tutorial in identity theft, as well as a cautionary tale about the susceptibility of people who have lost a loved one. But that's not the half of it.

Layton's film joins the top ranks of nonfiction films because he recognizes that in this case no solution could be as engrossing as the questions.

It's both preposterous and horrific, and therein lies its powerful, disquieting charm.

The real imposter here is the director.

A fascinating glimpse into the mind of a cunning con-man...and it's just as cunning as he was in constructing the story to hold our interest.

Trails off at the worst possible moment...its flaccid legal summary and closing visual manipulations are intentional, leaving audiences with a thoroughly sickening feeling to appreciate Bourdin's prolonged dance of narcissism.

A terrific tale of deception and self-deception, propelled by the presence of the smirking, cocky Barclay claimant, Fr?d?ric Bourdin.

The idea of "The Imposter" is more intriguing than the film's execution.

Keeps you unsettled, haunted, enthralled.

Everything about this story is unconvincing, except for the fact that it - or some version of it - happened.

The Imposter is one of those rare documentaries that, while its hard to know exactly how much is intensified for the purposes of making the film, is genuinely unsettling and infuriating to believe as fact and fiction.

Director Bart Layton owes a huge debt to Errol Morris, particularly "The Thin Blue Line," for his approach to this incredible story.

It's ... practically unbelievable, but you won't be able to look away.

Stranger than fiction...simply by presenting us with the facts as they unfolded, Layton winningly encourages more questions than answers.

VOICES IN THE FIELD: Limiting Support to Established Nonprofits ...

Recently, the United Way of the National Capital Area announced that going forward it would restrict its funding and would make grants only to nonprofits with budgets over $50,000. In this month?s ?Voices in the Field? we feature the perspectives and comments of several nonprofit leaders and philanthropy consultants on the question of whether relation between the size of a nonprofit?s operating budget and the impact it can create.

********

?United Ways across America are making a concerted effort to change their business models to be more relevant and impactful in the communities they serve.? This means shifting from the historic ?community chest?, with a broad charitable mission, to a change agent focused on substantive community impact to solve the most pressing civic challenges.? The solution includes focusing the community, convening partners and directing financial and personnel resources to effectuate real change?

All of these business model changes will not be easy to implement.? But, we believe they are absolutely necessary to make the United Way more relevant, trusted, and financially stable.?? Further, we are confident that United Way NCA and our member nonprofits, large and small, will mobilize the caring power of communities to create lasting changes that improve peoples? lives. And that?s what collective impact is all about?. Read more of Bill Hanbury?s official message?

-Bill Hanbury, President and CEO United Way of the National Capital Area

?The United Way that serves the nation?s capital last month announced a decision that signals trouble for small charities nationwide: It became one of a growing number of United Ways that are limiting their money to large and medium-size groups.

As donors and organizations like United Way focus more of their dollars on big charities, the gap is growing nationally between the haves and have-nots in the nonprofit world. And in a city like Washington, which has many low-income and minority residents, the new policy raises questions about whether the people most in need of money and services will benefit from local philanthropy.

Starting in 2013, the Washington United Way says it will award money only to groups that have at least $50,000 in revenue and overhead costs of 35 percent or less. What?s more, beneficiaries must have operated for at least three years. At risk of losing a share of the United Way pot, which last year tallied $23-million, are 100 to 150 of 800 local organizations.

- Pablo Eisenberg, excerpted from the Chronicle of Philanthropy August 9th commentary,
?A United Way?s Misguided Focus on Big Charities?

?When we first got into the United Way, we were under $40,000. We grew because of the United Way and the opportunity it afforded to get the idea of food recovery and empowerment in front of thousands of potential donors. Sad to think that ?small? programs with promise (like we were) might not get the same opportunity to rise up and flourish.?

- Robert Egger, founder and president of DC Central Kitchen, excerpted from ?A United Way?s Misguided Focus on Big Charities?

?It?s a good move,? ?It?ll enable them to focus on high-performing organizations. It won?t be without pain.?

- Chuck Bean, the president of the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington, excerpted from The Washington Post July 27th article ?D.C. area?s United Way tightens requirements for charity funding?)

?Others focus on the advantage small groups have of adapting to new economic environments because ?they?re more nimble.? However, just evaluating an organizations financials doesn?t provide the whole picture.? The number one way to determine an organization?s effectiveness is the results that its mission achieved.?

- Rebecca Thomas, vice president of direct services, strategy and innovation at the Nonprofit Finance Fund. (Excerpted from The Washington Post 7.27.2012 article ?D.C. area?s United Way tightens requirements for charity funding?)

?As more funders like the United Way favor organizations with larger budgets to manage risk, it may raise the stakes for family foundations as they consider to continue to support organizations that have diminishing funding opportunities, fewer funding partners.?Family foundations have an opportunity to be a more important voice in the funding community that recognize the role of small nonprofit organizations in the fabric of communities.?

-Prentice?Zinn, Director at GMA Foundations, on the National Center?s Family Philanthropy Network on LinkedIn

?In some ways, the DC United Way is leading them back to an original role ? and probably reflects a proper role of the large intermediaries in this century. I think that United Ways and their counterparts should [and are best suited to] support infrastructures of the non profit world, but they have never been ideally suited to support riskier philanthropic ventures or effective innovation. Mr. Zinn is correct to suggest that the independent philanthropy part of the sector, such as family funders, should take the lead in more agile funding and to provide for society?s risk capital?.

-Richard Marker, Co-Principal?at?Wise Philanthropy-Marker Goldsmith Philanthropy Advisors, on the National Center?s Family Philanthropy Network on LinkedIn

A little music training goes a long way: Practicing music for only few years in childhood helps improve adult brain

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? A little music training in childhood goes a long way in improving how the brain functions in adulthood when it comes to listening and the complex processing of sound, according to a new Northwestern University study.

The impact of music on the brain has been a hot topic in science in the past decade. Now Northwestern researchers for the first time have directly examined what happens after children stop playing a musical instrument after only a few years -- a common childhood experience.

Compared to peers with no musical training, adults with one to five years of musical training as children had enhanced brain responses to complex sounds, making them more effective at pulling out the fundamental frequency of the sound signal.

The fundamental frequency, which is the lowest frequency in sound, is crucial for speech and music perception, allowing recognition of sounds in complex and noisy auditory environments.

"Thus, musical training as children makes better listeners later in life," said Nina Kraus, the Hugh Knowles Professor of Neurobiology, Physiology and Communication Sciences at Northwestern.

"Based on what we already know about the ways that music helps shape the brain," she said, "the study suggests that short-term music lessons may enhance lifelong listening and learning."

"A Little Goes a Long Way: How the Adult Brain is Shaped by Musical Training in Childhood" will be published in the Aug. 22 edition of the Journal of Neuroscience.

"We help address a question on every parent's mind: 'Will my child benefit if she plays music for a short while but then quits training?'" Kraus said.

Many children engage in group or private music instruction, yet, few continue with formal music classes beyond middle or high school.

But most neuroscientific research has focused on the rare and exceptional music student who has continued an active music practice during college or on the rarer case of a professional musician who has spent a lifetime immersed in music.

"Our research captures a much larger section of the population with implications for educational policy makers and the development of auditory training programs that can generate long-lasting positive outcomes," Kraus said.

For the study, young adults with varying amounts of past musical training were tested by measuring electrical signals from the auditory brainstem in response to eight complex sounds ranging in pitch. Because the brain signal is a faithful representation of the sound signal, researchers are able to observe how key elements of the sound are captured by the nervous system and how these elements might be weakened or strengthened in different people with different experiences and abilities.

Forty-five adults were grouped into three age- and IQ- matched groups based on histories of musical instruction. One group had no musical instruction; another had 1 to 5 years; and the other had to 6 to 11 years. Both musically trained groups began instrumental practice around age 9 years, a common age for in-school musical instruction to begin. As predicted, musical training during childhood led to more robust neural processing of sounds later in life.

Prior research on highly trained musicians and early bilinguals revealed that enhanced brainstem responses to sound are associated with heightened auditory perception, executive function and auditory communication skills.

"From this earlier research, we infer that a few years of music lessons also confer advantages in how one perceives and attends to sounds in everyday communication situations, such as noisy restaurants or rides on the "L," Kraus said.

A running theme in Kraus' research is "your past shapes your present."

"The way you hear sound today is dictated by the experiences with sound you've had up until today," she said. "This new finding is a clear embodiment of this theme."

In past research, Kraus and her team examined how bilingual upbringing and long-term music lessons affect the auditory brain and how the brain changes after a few weeks of intensive auditory experiences, such as computerized training. Their current research is investigating the impact of socioeconomic hardships on adolescent brain function.

"We hope to use this new finding, in combination with past discoveries, to understand the type of education and remediation strategies, such as music classes and auditory-based training that might be most effective in combating the negative impact of poverty," she said.

By understanding the brain's capacity to change and then maintain these changes, the research can inform the development of effective and long-lasting auditory-based educational and rehabilitative programs.

Tropical Fish Tank | Tropical Fish Care Guide ... - PetsGo Pets guide

While setting up a tropical fish container might sound like an scary aspect for many people, it is not that hard as it looks like if you know what you?re doing. It?s a known fact that salt water aquariums can be extra delicate and take more work to be set up which is the reason the majority of people who are new to setting up aquariums, usually get started with freshwater aquariums. Another important aspect of setting up a tank for your fish is the equipment, and you will want to consider them. When looking for materials for your saltwater aquarium, never overlook supplies like gravel, vegetation, stones, and other tank decor, as well as supplies like water filters, heaters, and thermometers. You are not doing this for the sake of it, but because exotic fish is a bit more sensitive and you wouldn?t want to permit anything bad happen to it.

As a base for your aquarium, there are 2 things you may go with: gravel and sand. What you must know however is that sand takes a bit more time to settle than gravel dust, which makes the latter more popular than the previous one. Gravel is available in a wide selection of shades, shapes, sizes, and materials, helping you to create a natural tropical paradise or go crazy with your own choice in colorings and textures. Sand and gravel are also important for fixing plants, stones, and other decorations.

Another necessary aspect of setting up a tropical fish tank is the plants you?ll want to use. While it makes perfect sense to want to use organic plants for your tank, both for their natural appearance and the boost of fresh air they lend to the tank, you certainly wouldn?t want natural plants in your tank if you are going to have herbivorous fish as pets as the plants would be nibbled on by the fish. Should that be the case and you do intend to have herbivorous fish, than plastic plants is a far more obvious option. What?s more, live vegetation can introduce unwanted organisms to your tank, particularly as snails lay eggs on the underside of them. Oftentimes many people don?t realize their aquarium has been infested in any way until they notice 1000s of little snails eating their organic plants and sometimes even bothering the fish.

Rocks, wood hunks, as well as other big decorations are also necessary for setting up a tropical fish tank, particularly if you have timid or nocturnal varieties in your tank. These provide your fish with hiding places and resting spots, which can work wonders for reducing stress and encouraging happy fish. These also make captivating decorations.

And last but not least, the filters, heaters and other additional equipment. this is all necessary stuff for controlling the water purity and temperature. Two very important things to take into account about water filtering and climate are these: the aquarium will have to be stored at a temperature of seventy seven degrees Fahrenheit, unless specified otherwise, and the water filter must be checked regularly between cleanings, as it can quickly become clogged.

These are only a couple of suggestions when it comes to setting up a tropical fish tank. In following this advice, soon you?ll have the perfect habitat for your new fish to dwell in.

Guest Post ? Jan Welborn-Nichols, From Chubby Childhood to Food ...

    Jan Welborn-Nichols

Guest Author, Jan Welborn-Nichols ? Then & Now

Here?s how I remember it. I was in the sixth grade. It was get-weighed-day in health class. No big deal, right? Wrong. It?s a very big deal when you?re overweight and you know it. Like a perfect storm of horrible, the teacher (whose name I?ve blocked from memory) calmly called each student to the front of the class, where she had us get on the scale. That?s bad enough, but then she said our weight out loud. I was about 5? 2? and I weighed 168 pounds. Worse than the usual taunts of ?fatso? or ?blubber belly?, the room was deadly quiet.

That was it, the event that caused me to ?change my life?, at least for a while. I took charge of how much I was eating, cutting my portions in half, and I exercised after lunch and dinner. Hey, I was 11. I didn?t know about letting food digest before doing jumping jacks, sit-ups and leg lifts.

It?s no wonder I was a chubby kid. I loved food from the get-go and I ate plus-size portions of all things fried, with buttered-up potatoes and plenty of dessert. Vegetables made a token appearance at our table, and our salads were the sweet kind: ambrosia, jell-o, and my personal favorite, graham cracker crumbs with whipped cream and chopped dates. Oh, my!

I lost weight that summer and I grew several inches, starting the seventh-grade as a normal-sized kid. But the weight loss didn?t stick. Now, a lifetime later, I understand why I couldn?t win at the losing game. I changed the outside me that long ago summer, but the inside me, my emotional self, didn?t come along on the journey.

When I was a chubby kid there weren?t very many kids like me. Sadly, that?s no longer the case. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 17%, or 12.5 million kids between the ages of 2 and 19, are obese. That?s double the population of my home state of Missouri. Why then, when there is so much nutrition information readily available, unlike when I was growing up in the 1950s and ?60s, is childhood obesity on the rise?

Complex questions give rise to complicated answers: too little physical activity, too many high calorie foods with low nutritional value, too many people with little access to fresh produce. The external issues that contribute to childhood obesity are many, but it was an internal change that allowed me to finally succeed at achieving a healthy weight.

This may sound strange, but the ability to change my lifestyle, and consequently my life, happened only after I accepted myself exactly as I was. It was a small emotional shift with an enormous pay-off. I realized that my life was happening now, this moment, and I had been deferring happiness most of life. When I wanted to change the way I felt, more than the way I looked, the weight gradually came off and stayed off. I learned to feed my whole self, to choose foods that nourished all of me. In short, I became a Food Detective, reading ingredient labels with a passion; ever on the lookout for the hidden presence of sugar, salt and fat.

It?s taken me most of a lifetime to get over being a chubby kid. Now, I want to make a difference in the lives of kids who are in danger of growing up overweight with all that that means, physically and emotionally. I want to introduce imagination to nutrition, showing kids of all ages how to be Food Detectives, learning cool stuff about the stuff they choose to eat.

Facts can be forgotten, but a story lasts a lifetime. And though I don?t have a super power like the characters in my book, I do have the power to be my best, healthiest and happiest self by making smart food choices. And that?s a power I want everyone to have.
