Disable Java? Here's how, after US agency warns of software 'vulnerability.'

With an eye on the security of millions of Internet users, the US Department of Homeland Security is advising Americans to temporarily disable Java, a software commonly used in Web-browser programs.

It?s not that Java itself contains a malicious computer virus. The problem is what the agency calls a software ?vulnerability,? a kind of open door for hackers to infiltrate a computer. That can result in identity theft or other bad things happening on your computer.

?We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem,? said a notice released this week by CERT, a group sponsored by the Homeland Security Department?s cybersecurity division. The group is based at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.?

The recommendation highlights the rising threat level in the realm of cybersecurity, and the growing efforts to make devices and networks more secure. The vulnerability in Java is just one piece of that puzzle, but it?s significant because the software is so widely used in Web browsing.

If you want to follow CERT?s advice and disable Java, how do you do that?

First, if you use a Mac computer from Apple, the answer appears to be simple. According to reports by technology websites including MacRumors.com, Apple has already moved to force a disabling of Java on Macs with the OS X operating system.

For other computer users, a first step may be to check what version of Java you're running. The CERT announcements focus on Java 7. Computer-security blogger Brian Krebs notes some uncertainty about whether other versions going back to Java 4 are affected. But he points to evidence suggesting the problem is limited to version 7.

Oracle, the owner of Java, said on Twitter that the problem is limited to "JDK7," or version 7, and that it hopes to have a fix available "shortly." (JDK stands for Java Development Kit.)

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- J.J. Redick scored 10 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter Saturday and Orlando broke a 10-game skid with a 104-101 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Redick's 3-pointer with 42 seconds left broke a 99-99 tie and powered the Magic to their first victory since Dec. 21.

Redick drained four 3-pointers in all and Arron Afflalo pumped in 30 points with seven rebounds and seven assists in the victory.

Nikola Vucevic dominated under the boards, grabbing 15 rebounds to go along with 18 points for the Magic.

Blake Griffin went 15-of-22 from field en route to 30 points, eight boards and seven assists for the Clippers, who retained the NBA's best record at 28-9.

Chris Paul dished off 16 assists and scored 10 points.

Ford Mustang still delivers plenty of muscle

Considering all the changes that Ford made to the 2013 Mustang, one wonders what the Detroit automaker might be saving for next year.

Why is next year so important? It just happens to be the 50th anniversary of the esteemed Mustang, one of America's standard bearers in the "muscle car" category.

Not only did changes come this year, Ford has made modifications to the Mustang in three of the last four years. And you can bet next year will make four out of five!

The 2013 Mustang takes on a new exterior look and has interior changes as well.

Among the exterior changes are:

• Standard xenon headlights with LED accents
• Shelby-inspired grille
• Restyled front and rear fascias
• Updated taillights

The interior changes are not as numerous. The main alterations are a new performance information display
and making Recaro seats available in all models.

The biggest change this year in the five Mustang trim models is the Shelby GT500 versions, which has been re-engineered. The GT500 is more of a beast than ever, featuring a 5.0-liter, V8 that generates 420 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. Unfortunately for me, this was not the test model.

Speaking of performance, Mustang made a conscious decision in 2010 to address the issue. After very few changes over a five-year period, for a muscle car, the Mustang was simply lacking real muscle.

That's no longer an issue.

This year the base and premium model (tested here) are a 3.7-liter, V6 that has 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The GT models are a step up in performance and the Boss 302 is nearly off the charts, a 5.0-liter, V8 with 44 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Note that the Boss 302 is also quite a jump in price as well - $42,200.

The Mustang has made improvements, but the knock against the interior remains space issues and too much hard plastic. Although most drivers will appreciate the abundant leg and head room in the front cabin, any adult relegated to the backseat will not be a happy camper. Entry and exit are difficult as well. The cargo space (decent 12.3 cubic feet) is good for a coupe.

The Mustang GT provides solid road handling and a firm ride with little road absorption. This rear-wheel drive coupe grips the road with tremendous accuracy and brakes with assurance. The Mustang has an improved suspension and the general opinion is it drives with more agility than either the Challenger or Camaro.

With the performance problem addressed, the Mustang can again effectively take on two of its primary challengers - the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger. There's also a new challenger, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Judged in all categories, the Mustang stacks up quite well with all three.

• Mileage estimate: 15-29 mpg
• Price: $22,200 to $42,200

Flowers Foods to buy some Hostess brands

Flowers Foods Inc on Friday said it has agreed to buy Wonder and other well-known bread brands from Hostess Brands Inc for $390 million, as part of the latter company's bankruptcy reorganization.

The Thomasville, Ga.-based company said it agreed to pay $360 million for the Wonder, Butternut, Home Pride, Merita and Nature's Pride brands, as well as 20 bakeries and 38 depots.

It also entered a second contract where it agreed to pay $30 million for the Beefsteak brand.

Gregory Rayburn, Hostess' chief executive, said the Kansas City, Mo.-based company remains in talks to sell its snack cake business, including Twinkies and Drake's cakes, as well as its remaining bread brands.Flowers already owns brands such as Cobblestone Mill, Nature's Own and Tastykake. It said it expects the purchases to add to earnings in 2013, and that it would finance them with cash on hand plus debt.

The Flowers purchase is subject to higher bids at a court-supervised auction, and requires approval by regulators as well as U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain in White Plains, N.Y.

Hostess will ask that the auction take place on Feb. 28, with a hearing to authorize a sale on March 5.

In winning the right to serve as the initial bidder in the auction, Flowers beat out Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV, one of the world's largest bakers, whose U.S. brands include Entenmann's, Sara Lee and Thomas'.

Hostess said it chose the Flowers bids after its bankers at Perella Weinberg Partners ran a bidding process that drew 169 prospective buyers, including 87 that signed confidentiality agreements.

Grupo Bimbo representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hostess in November decided to shut down its baking business and liquidate after a strike by its baker's union crippled the 82-year-old company.

One of Hostess' bankers, Joshua Scherer, told Drain at a November court hearing that the company's brands had drawn "furious" buyer interest, including from national retailers.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Kroger Co are among prospective buyers, according to media reports.
