While the NHL lockout drags on, Major League Baseball salaries continue to skyrocket with some unbelievable signings during the offseason.
The Boston Red Sox signed free-agent outfielder Shane Victorino to a three-year, $39-million contract on Dec. 4. Last season, Victorino hit .255 with 11 home runs, 55 RBIs and 39 stolen bases while playing for the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers.??
?Victorino?s contract?works out to $13 million a year ? more than any player in the NHL was slated to earn during the 2012-13 season, with the New Jersey Devils? Ilya Kovalchuk topping that list at $11 million.
Victorino?s salary works out to an average of $240,740 per game. This for a guy who hit .255 with 11 home runs and 55 RBIs. Unbelievable!
The MLB players? association announced on Dec. 7 that the average salary increased 3.8 per cent this year to a record $3.2 million. The New York Yankees had the highest average at $6.88 million.
I imagine there are some hockey players who wish they had played more baseball when they were growing up.
